This swivel guide is far simpler and more effective due to its low mass and elasticity than the ones using bearings or a single ball. The PTFE tube helps reduce friction.

For smooth operation, I concluded it was best to locate the spool holder on the side in such a way the spool is in the same plane as the X/Z. The filament unwinds naturally, no kink, no binding Furthermore the spool that is quite heavy won't interfere with the printer as it is not mounted to it.
