Its function in life is to retain the balance plug while flying your quad so your props don't catch the wires and ruin your day.
I found the original version must have been made for scrawny little wires and would not clip properly to the wires of the batteries that I use in my racing quad. My version has enlarged holes and surround more of the wire for a more positive lock.
