This is a band gap guidance based waveguide which has a photonic crystal design in its transverse plane. The crystal consists of cylindrical rods, arranged in a trigonal lattice.
Additional thin plates are inserted along the cylinder axis for mounting and for further tuning of the supported mode.
The goal was to guide a TM-like mode for particle acceleration but a redesign was necessary and the present structure does not trap a propagating mode properly. The new design is not realized as a CA
