The badge is based on the Plymouth Pilgrims than their sailing vessel: the Mayflower.
Although Plymouth vehicles bore dazzling hood ornaments throughout its early years–including a winged mermaid–it wasn’t until two decades later that the public witnessed this, the first official emblem of the brand.
