I have had a hard time opening my Fermonsters after my beer had been fermenting for a while, and I didn't really tighten down that hard. I used to try using my belt to open. I just measured the lid and cut out a shape that would allow me to get some leverage without. It works pretty good. You can easily leave the inside shape that grips the lid and make your own outer handle.
