It was developed on the basis of the KV heavy tank. Initially, it had almost no differences from the production vehicles. In January and February 1941, the vehicle underwent testing at a test site. Subsequently, a number of modifications were made to the tank's design, which significantly improved its performance. By June 22, 1941, the chassis and engine had been completed. According to some reports, in the autumn of 1941, the vehicle was equipped with a turret from a production KV tank and sent to the front.
