The order needed a hunter who could match what was coming. So they sent eight men into the deep with a contract written on bone. Six did not come back. The two who did brought back a skull — a thing the order had not given a name to, because no one in living memory had ever seen one this size standing. They did not bury it. They rebuilt it. The legs were forged in the under-foundries beneath the cathedral. The jaw still hums with the breath of the thing it used to belong to. The mounted cannons were Guntar's design — he refused to sign his name to them. The rider, Hunterlando, was the only hunter mad enough to climb on. He says he did not break the beast.
