I wanted to do a bigger led matrix for a long time and startet building a baseplate with wood, quickly realizing i had no way to properly add a diffusor in front of the leds before i got my 3d printer. I searched for a 16x16grid to lay on top of the led panels (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6492828) and edited the edges so you can add them together with minimal visible breakup. The build plates are named after the parts. I printed everything in PLA white as tests showed black dims brightness a lot. I also liked the light of each pixel spreading onto its proximity, giving it a nice retro look. I also glued all parts together for hassle free alignment on top of the panels.
