Roman fort on the Antonine wall, Roughcastle plus annex, scale 1/1000
The antonine wall was built by Hadrian's successor, Antoninus Pius, starting from around 142 AD. It is about 70 miles north of Hadrian's wall and runs from Bo'ness on the Forth estuary to Old Kilpatrick on the Clyde, a length of about 37 miles. The wall was abandoned after about 20 years and was never built in stone, only a rampart built from turfs. This, and that it runs through the industrial heartland of Scotland, means preservation is poorer than Hadrian's wall
Like Hadrian's wall there were forts fairly frequently along the wall. This is a model based on the best preserved of these at Roughcastle near Falkirk. This fort is unusually small, with a disproportionately large annex
