Apple Maggot Trap

Apple maggot traps are very effective at limiting damage caused by apple maggots and other pests that impact fruit trees. These traps must be used with a sticky coating such as Tanglefoot, Olson Sticky Stuff, or Catchmaster Insect Barrier Adhesive. There are also homemade adhesive formulas, but they all have mixed reviews. Personally, I have used Tanglefoot with good results. Apple maggots are attracted to red, but other insects are drawn to different colors. Biting flies and insects that feed on blood are often drawn to black, but other dark shades may work. Many smaller fruit and garden pests are drawn to yellow and orange. This trap style is mainly found in red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and black. Apply the glue to the outside of the trap, and refresh the glue when the traps are no longer sticky. Dust accumulation is the most significant limiting factor impacting the glue.
