Welcum to the description thing page of the Baywatch Direct Dail.
It is a handset phone that has a generic cheap smartphone under the hood (Samsung S4 Mini in this case).
It constantly measures the voltage at the speaker of the handset. If someone is speaking, the µC detects it by the rising voltage. This causes the font field to flash rapidly until someone picks it up or 10s elapse. ("GEH RAN !!" is German for "ANSWER IT")
In standby (no one speaking or picked up) the font field glows at 6% PWM.
It gets plugged into a generic USB charger which supplies the phone, the LEDs + the µC.
Initially it was planned to build two of those and place them in two art exhibitions so visitors could talk to the other venue. This was dropped because I could not get hold of another matching handset. We decided to build only one and let it play Jerry B. Andersons wisdoms instead.
