I designed this to hold a dial indicator for bed leveling. With the printing heads removed, it snaps into the hole left behind. It is slightly oversize. Slots in the body allow it to compress. When in place, it securely clamps the shaft of the indicator. Small beads on the body cause it to snap securely into place.
You can get a cheap indicator for less than $20 (Harbor Freight).
Once in place, home the X,Y,and Z axes. You will need to trip the X limit switch during homing because this is normally done by the print head (now removed). Once done, you can use the touch screen commands to jog the indicator all around the print surface. You will be surprised how flat your print surface isn't. Mine had a 0.005" valley on the front edge. Except for that area, mine is level to 0.001" in 2 minutes.
Drawn with Inventor 2019. Part file is uploaded if you want to modify it for your needs.
