The History of Big Ben Tower Big Ben is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, located in London, England. It is part of the Palace of Westminster and is widely recognized as a symbol of British culture and heritage. Despite common belief, Big Ben is actually the nickname of the Great Bell inside the tower, while the structure itself is officially called the Elizabeth Tower. Origins and ConstructionThe history of Big Ben dates back to the 19th century. In 1834, the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by a fire, leading to the need for a new building. The architect Charles Barry designed the new structure and included a clock tower in his plans. The clock and its mechanism were designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and constructed by clockmaker Edward John Dent. After Dent’s death, his stepson Frederick Dent completed the work in 1854.
