SCREWS An inclined plane that is wrapped around a cone or cylinder in a spiral pattern is a simple machine called a screw. We typically use screws as fasteners, such as bolts and wood screws. The mechanical advantage comes from the steepness of the inclined plane, called the thread, around the cone or cylinder. The steeper the thread, the less mechanical advantage you gain. The screw will go in quickly, but will require much more force. A screw with a shallow slope will be much easier to put in, but you will have to turn the screw many times.
