Well It's been such a long time since I posted up a model here. I've been working in industry on different projects for the past few years, so unfortunately I'm not able to share many of those items due to client privacy/IP. Anyway, I thought I'd kick off the new year by putting up a model. I've had the privilege to work with Box racing components on a few projects since 2016. Box Racing Components, founded by BMX legend, Toby Henderson, first started out in the BMX world but has been recently been making a push into the mountain biking space.... they make all sorts of awesome mountain bike components and have built a reputation as a viable, high quality option, to some of the other big names in the bike component industry. This particular project called for a twin shifter design to complement their push push line of shifters. For initial direction, some rough sketches were provided by the engineering team and we worked together on material selection and case design. Because of the nature of the part (ie. clam shell, seams had to match) I used a top down approach (linking sketches through the assembly), this made it much easier for the engineering team to do on-the-fly adjustments to the model, during the 3D printing and prototype phase, back in California. Another challenging aspect with this project was the fact that it contained injection molded and cast parts, this meant that all shapes/surfaces needed to be drafted, which is always more difficult as you can't always easily create planes off of the work surfaces, there are no straight angles. One of the main reasons why I'm so proud of this project is because it's the first project I've worked on that was mass manufactured and sold in stores and on-line, world wide. As an industrial designer, to get a product out there in circulation is what we're ultimately after. To be able to see a design you were involved with, out there in stores or on a bike is an incredible feeling. So a big thanks to Box and team for mak
