As the dawn space craft has begun orbiting ceres I thought I'd try and turn the images coming back into a 3D model.
The poles lack detail due to the combination of Dawns orbit, the sun and the limits of the photogammetry software I'm using (agisoft photoscan). Essentially I could only map those areas not in too much shade. I hope to make a better model when NASA releases more images.
The source of the NASA images:

I broke the gif animation into frames and used a blank black mask with a tolerance of 150 in photoscan to mask areas in too much shadow. Any less was resulting in warped models.
I then used blender to add a sphere to the model in order to fill out the poles. I then passed it back to photoscan to generate a texture. Then back to blender to texture paint the poles.
Also if you like this you can see my later designs or contact me via
