The [Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector](https://cms.cern/detector) is one of the big four experiments of the [Large Hadron Collider (LHC)](https://home.cern/topics/large-hadron-collider), the world’s largest and most powerful [particle accelerator](https://home.cern/about/how-accelerator-works). The LHC is part of [CERN](https://home.cern/about)'s accelerator complex in Geneva, Switzerland. The detector is located 100 meters underground near Cessy, France, at the opposite end of the LHC from [ATLAS detector](https://atlas.cern/). It is 15 meters high and 21 meters long, and it weighs 14,000 tonnes.
