Lets face it, those christmas tree stands that have the legs, the bucket and the three screws aren't the easiest of things to use. It's fine if your tree stump fits snugly into the bucket, but if your stump is too narrow then the bottom of the stump can slip around on the bottom of the bucket, especially once you've added water, and you have to make those three screw insanely tight to stop the tree moving around.
Use one of these - put it in the bottom of the bucket, spikes upwards, and the stump of the tree rests on it. The stump can't then slide around, and the screws can do a better job of holding the tree upright.
For the other case, when the stump is too wide for the bucket, and you have to hack away at it with whatever meager tools you have at your disposal.. I can't help you there i'm afraid.
For printing, scale the x and y axes to give you a diameter just smaller than your bucket, and scale the z axis for the height of spikes you want (affects printing time). Res
