I have several clamp lights around the house and over time the swivel fails. The metal brackets that squeeze the knurled ball get tightened up so much they bend the metal. I modified my first clamp light with this reinforcement bracket that wraps around and over the top of the metal clamps. Uses the existing screw and square nut. Recess designed to cradle the nut and keep it from spinning. This will help distribute the force and prevent the metal from deforming. I don't know how common these hardware pieces are and may need to modify geometry to fit other manufacturers.
You need to take some pliers and straighten out the brackets back to their original shape prior to adding this reinforcement bracket. They bend very easily. As I fix other lights, I will upload any modifications. One potential modification would be adding a knurled knob to tighten on occasion by hand instead of the Phillips screw.
