Compression Lamps The compression lamps are a physical manifestation of energy. The lamp is crushed into shape with physics based simulations. Design I chose the theme of energy, to create for the GrabCAD design challenge. As i felt it was less explored and could take advantage of 3d printers ability to create complex forms. Attempting to create a lamp whose form was driven by purely tectonic force and energy. Starting with a few experiments with different physics simulations (inflation, tension and compression). I found that trying to incorporate extreme compressive forces led to some exciting results. The sphere started to buckle, generating fluid ripples across the surface. Not only did this create vivid shadows, but it was non-repeating pattern, so every angle is unique. The overall form of the sphere was maintained, to create a more geometrical and sculptural feel. Here I have only shown a few simulations, but the generative definition could create a range of different lamps each defined by its own forces and pressures, creating a family of products each with their own bespoke defining forces. Technical. The design will fit on a Makerbot 2 Replicator bed. 190 x 190 x 140mm The material thickness is approximately 5mm Attached file is a closed mesh stl. The form is a single surface semi-spherical shape, therefore it uses minimal material while maximising size, and should print fairly reliably. The crinkled form should create a rigid self supporting shell. The lamp requires minimal assembly.
