Running a 3D printing lab at a university I have several printers all in close proximity to one another. Having the rolls of PLA at the back of the machine drives me nuts. It is such a pain. Each time I change the roll, which is sometimes several times per print, I find have to turn the entire printer around to see what I am doing. This is very annoying especially if you dont have much space between printers, not to mention you run the risk of pulling out the power cord (not good mid print) or smushing the protruding SD card into something.
My first solution is this design. I did the same thing for our Makerbot Replicator+ machines (I haven't published it yet) so I already have a spool holder that the rolls of PLA can ride on next to the printer. The one I made for the Makerbot is very similar and has worked well for over two years now.
I think I will eventually get to designing a new one that will simply hold the entire roll above or beside the printer with a piece to hold the f
