When you have more dresses than dolls, you need to have a way to show them. This print was part of a non-profit, fund-raising project. While there was one Doll, there were many dresses, and they needed to be displayed in a flattering fashion!
The wooden dowels are 5/8" in diameter. If a long dress is to be displayed, only the top half needs to be printed, though both pieces make for a more flattering presentation.
Designed to fit the American Girl series of dolls, there is otherwise no other connection with that brand, express or implied.
