Over-the-door hangers are sometimes wider than the thickness of the door. When you open and close the door, these hangers slide back and forth, sometimes scratching the door or wall.

This widget fits under the protruding outside edge to hold it out (and the inside edge flush to the door) at all times. You can, or course, adjust the pre-sliced model to the desired thickness and width. Hold it in place under the hook with double-sided tape.
