My son asked me to help him with a school assignment where he needs to make a model of the layers that make up the earth. We found the awesome Textured Earth model by bld and chopped it in half with netfabb Free. Then I used OpenSCAD to increase the size and inset rings which highlight the different layers. We used the measurements from his science textbook and scaled them down for the model so it should be a fairly accurate scale model. Once the rings were done I again used netfabb Free to chop the model into four parts that fit on my Printrbot Simple.
The size of the model is almost 10.5" in diameter.
We are planning on gluing the model together with Loctite 401 glue. My son is going to paint it with Testors model paint.
[Update 2016-02-28] Designed a stand to hold the model. I used M3 screws to attached the small plates to the front of the stand.
