Eelpout

Eelpouts are elongated, benthic fish belonging to the family Zoarcidae, mostly found in cold marine environments, including the North Pacific, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Arctic regions. They have slender bodies, small heads, and long tails, which help them navigate rocky substrates and deep waters. Eelpouts are primarily carnivorous, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates. They serve as mid-level predators, linking lower trophic levels to larger marine animals such as whales and larger fish. Adapted to low temperatures and low oxygen environments, they often possess high fat content and other physiological adaptations.
