The Douglas F3D Skyknight was an American jet-powered night fighter developed in the late 1940s. Unlike the sleek, fast designs of its era, the Skyknight was bulky and straightforward, earning it the nickname “Willie the Whale.” It was equipped with side-by-side seating for its two-man crew and carried one of the earliest onboard radar systems, allowing it to track and destroy enemy aircraft in complete darkness or poor weather. Entering service during the Korean War, the Skyknight proved highly effective against enemy aircraft, including MiG-15 jet fighters, despite being slower and less maneuverable. Its reliable radar and weapons made it a formidable night interceptor, and it achieved the first radar-guided jet-to-jet kill in history. Later, the F3D was adapted for electronic warfare and served into the Vietnam era as the EF-10B, providing jamming and electronic countermeasures.
