I was interested if it would be possible and useful to do the cooling tasks on a 3D printer extruder with compressed air instead of fans - and I must say: yes - it definitely works very well, way better than expected. I'm currently printing/cooling with 0.2 to 1.0 bar pressure.
The print results are very nice and it's less noisy as 2 to 4 40mm fans (if your compressor is far away or soundproofed of course).
The idea was born as I upgraded my CTC with two Flexion extruders and my old cooling duct did not fit anymore due to the thermal isolators around the heaters. And most other designs doesn't make it easy to watch your printer printing because of lots of fans around the print head. Furthermore the compressed air upgrade made the printhead lighter, what should influence jittering in a positive manner.
The last photo shows how the printhead looked before the improvement.
