The Flowtafilter is an analytical tool to measure the flow distribution coming from an espresso machine grouphead. Water flow from the group is collected in four catchments, and the output of each can be separately measured. Since the surface area of each catchment is equal, water flux through each is also expected to be equal. The inside bottom surface is sloped 10 deg to aid in drainage, but also to allow for experiments tilting the machine by as much as 10 deg. There is enough room within the tool to fit a 1.7 mm puck screen.
The Flowtafilter can be used to simulate the preinfusion conditions of espresso brewing, namely before the headspace is filled with water and before pressure is generated (i.e. it's used empty without ground coffee). However this can be helpful to analyze flow distribution through dispersion blocks, shower screens, and puck screens.
