The Foundling is the nickname attributed to the protagonist by Sester Genessa.
It is an Unborn created in a ritual devised by Hadern and Solomon, but otherwise, nobody knows what it is, it doesn't even know what it truly is.
When a shell's durability is depleted, the Foundling is cast out of it. It can then continue to fight unprotected with limited health or return to the shell and re-inhabit it one more time, but losing the shell again will kill the Foundling.
