I'm building a guitar. I wanted a fret slotting template/system, They're insanely expensive if you're doing a one-off, so I've designed one.
*There is no getting around needing a well trammed and dimensionally accurate printer*
The template is in 3 pieces which need to be glued together. There is zero clearance in the joining parts. With my printer and prusa slicer the joins are within 0.02mm of dimensional accuracy which is close enough for me.
The stls are for a 25 1/2 inch (648mm) scale/24 frets. The first notch is for either the zero fret or the nut position.
I've included the freecad source files where scale length and the fret positions are driven by a spreadsheet for easy modification - just set the scale length. I've also included holes for 3mm locating pins (I use bamboo skewers) on the fretboard. If you use a different scale length or fewer than 24 frets you'll probably want to move these too.
I used a couple of wedges to lock the template in place.
