(As-Built, to reflect the stuff I had lying around. There are better bearings to use for this, but they cost a lot.)
A tool for demonstrating the kinematic restriction of sliding friction: that the net sliding friction force points in the opposite the direction of relative motion at the center of pressure. This widget might help illustrate situations where the direction of relative motion is not intuitive.
The idea is that you push the bottom of the bearing pad into sliding against something, and the friction force on the sliding face will pull the bearing pad in that direction.
Additional materials:
- LM8UU linear bearing
- 8mm bearing rod (cut to 45mm long)
- 110M size bearing (obsolete and unavailable)
Additional processes:
I cleaned the radial bearing with isopropanol and re-oiled it with CLP, since this is a lighter load application than the bearing was ever meant to handle. Any reduction in internal friction will make the indicator more sensitive, requiring les
