The conceptual Surface Gaming Controller was originally designed by Hannes Geipel. One of the challenges I ran into was with the reference picture. At first, I didn’t notice that the middle part of the controller had a different curve. Later I realized the image wasn’t actually a top view, it was tilted slightly. That meant the “top view” I was following wasn’t accurate, and the geometry ended up varying. Right now the model is about 98% done. I didn’t push it to 100% because I know there are areas I could do better. For most of the process, I extruded the side view and the top view. Instead of using a projection curve, I went with an intersection curve. From my experience, it felt easier and made more sense. I still use projection curves in other cases, like when modeling a mouse. There are so many techniques you can use to build a 3D model, and I’m just exploring them all. This project involved a lot of trial and error. I didn’t get the result I wanted on the first try, but that’s part of learning. Failure is time consuming, but it’s also what helps me figure out how to be more efficient next time. Later on, I’ll apply what I learned from those mistakes to improve my workflow. If I were to create this again, I’d definitely simplify it with fewer feature. Since I’m still learning, it’s expected that I’ll pack a lot of things that aren't that necessary into a single SolidWorks file. Over time, I’ll make it even better and keep things cleaner.
