Design DescriptionThis is my first fully self-designed 3D print made from scratch in Fusion 360. The idea came out of a real-life problem: I wanted to automate my rolling garage door using a smart opener (relay + sensors). While the relay was easy, the sensor mounting was tricky because of the rolling door type and floor proximity. The Problems I FacedMounting near the floor – The sensor needs to sit right at the bottom corner of the door, but drilling a perfect 90° into rock-hard wall just 4mm above the ground is basically impossible.Durability issues – Placing the sensor flat on the floor wasn’t an option since it could be stepped on or damaged by water during heavy rain.Maintenance – The sensor runs on batteries, so I needed an easy way to remove and replace it without dismantling or using tools each time.My Design SolutionTo solve this, I created a custom bracket holder for the sensor:Wall Mounting Flexibility – The bracket can be attached to the wall with either a screw (if you have space) or adhesive (if drilling is impractical).Slide-In Housing – The sensor slides in from the side into snug slots, keeping it stable.Locking Piece – A secondary piece slides down from above, blocking the sensor from slipping out sideways. Removing this piece unlocks the sensor for battery replacement – no tools needed.Magnet Protection – Because the sensor is magnetic, the casing is designed to hold it securely so it won’t just stick to its opposite side.Structural Strength – I made the walls slightly bulkier than "minimalist design," because thinner prints in this small format tended to snap too easily during testing. Why It WorksThis bracket solves the mounting limitations of rolling garage doors, keeps the sensor safe from damage or water, and makes maintenance quick and tool-free. It also demonstrates how 3D printing lets us adapt off-the-shelf smart products to tricky, real-world installations.
