I wanted a gear depthing tool for getting the right spacing between handmade gears. This is loosely based on a design by Chris at Clickspring (http://www.clickspringprojects.com/pinion-head-depthing-tool.html). I build wooden clocks, so I don't have the tooling to make a nice brass one like he made, so I designed this one in sketchup. I made inserts for 3/16" rods and 1/8" rods since that's what I'm using for my gear axles. The inserts have a small hole for nails to go out the bottom, and a larger hole to hold the axles.
Print:
- 2 body halves (or 1 body whole)
- 2 carriages
- 2 knobs
- 2x Whichever inserts you need (either 1/8, 3/16)
Other parts:
- 2 spare axles for the gears you're testing that match the inserts you printed
- 2 nails for the bottom of the inserts, my nails are 24mm long, 2mm diameter
- 10-32 threaded rod
- 2x 10-32 nuts.
