After I created the Geometric Ornament in OpenSCAD http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:298373, I thought it would make a nice trivet and decided to use Shapeways to print one in ceramic. It turns out that the design rules for ceramic printing are very restrictive compared to printing in PLA. There are rules about the overall size and the minimum and maximum wall thicknesses. This has to do with the sintering process that is required to finish the ceramic. It took several iterations with Shapeways before the design was printable. And then I had to wait a few weeks for it to be made and shipped! It's definitely much better having a printer on your desktop.

It is now available in my shop on Shapeways if you want one in ceramic: http://www.shapeways.com/model/1858049/geometric-trivet.html?li=shortUrl&key=c768bf358527d0054f3b0801ba422c2d

I've included photos of the ceramic version as well as one I printed in PLA as a test print. Please do not use PLA with hot dishes in your kitchen.
