My apartment doesn't have a big enough deck to utilize my full size garden barrel, so I designed a miniature version for herbs.
The base of the barrel collects excess water that can be reused to water the garden. The little side pockets are a great way to separate your different herbs. The pot design is also stack-able if you wanted to do that.

As it happens, while working on this design I was also reading a book about another man's gardening troubles and tribulations that lead him to the very same conclusion as me. I 100% recommend this book as a fun nonfiction read:
