Since honeycomb shapes are cool, I figured I'd try my own variant since it's simple enough.

This hexamesh I made in Blender (v2.76b) uses a path and modifiers in additon to the base meshes. One array modifier should automatically adjust to the path. The other one adjusts the overall height of the final mesh. Adjust depth using the solidify modifier, and feel free to edit the path for your own unique shapes. (It can get fairly weird by using radius and tilt on the bezier handles for the path. Keep in mind some deformations may not be manifold.)

In additon to the main mesh there are additional cap meshes which are needed for how the array works, you may need to delete those after applying the modifiers and doing other clean-up. I don't have a 3D printer myself, so I suspect this will require additonal scaling, orientation, and clean-up prior to printing. Keep in mind this varies depending on how the path and modifiers are setup.
