The Jumping Urchin is a good example of a basal polypod. These resemble a roughly sphere-like core with several spikes protruding from holes in the shell. These spikes slide in a linear manner, moving up or down but never detaching from the body. This unique method of movement allows jumping urchins the ability to jump by "flinging" their core into the air. They also have the ability to flip over (as shown on screen), angling their body to jump in any direction.
