I previously submitted the design for "K40 Laser work area brackets - without spring" which includes the rational for this type of material support system. This is the same design with the addition of an extension that acts as a spring. Thus you don't need to buy hardware to make it work. On the other hand you don't have the option to upgrade it to precise levels like you can using machine screws.
I recommend using the metal bars so that you don't laser into the plastic and cut it. But you could use scraps of wood or acrylic also.
I am including a grid design I printed on cardstock which is positioned down in the lower left corner against the brackets as shown. I lasered the grid on it and then recorded the position of the laser at the center. Now I can use that as a base point to position designs pretty close to where I want on the workpiece. In my laser, the focus is about 8mm above the frame. So the glass bead is about the right height with no spacers to push down ag
