A few months ago I printed some large chess pieces for display. This quarter board was printed as large as my printer can go (250mm wide) and then friction welded together. Each square is 62.5 mm wide.
This same concept could be modified to make a full 64 square board. At some point I may go back and design a full board that can be printed in segments and welded together. That is unless I decide to go for one of the larger format printers that came on the market this year.
There is room for improvement in the design of tabs that connect the two halves of the board. I had to file the corners before welding them together. The model would probably be stronger if the tabs overlap more. The model would also likely benefit from being a bit deeper.
