Here is my mini Christmas Tree (21cm tall) with colour fading LEDs. You can use any 5mm LEDs but I happened to have the slow fade ones which worked out nicely.

I powered mine from USB via a mini buck converter set to output 2.65v per the LED datasheet. All of the LEDs are wired in parallel without any resistors which does work although not usually recommended. Just make sure you preset & check the buck converter output voltage before connecting the LEDs to avoid popping any. I also used a mini CR2032 3v battery cell to test with but you could also use a pair of AAA batteries in series.

I used thin jumper wire with solder followed by some hot melt glue to build and secure mine.
I think it also looks nice hung on a wall facing backwards.
