The AircraftThe development of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy began in the early 1960s, when the U.S. Air Force sought a heavy strategic airlifter capable of transporting large military equipment over intercontinental distances without refueling. The C-5 was conceived to replace the smaller C-141 Starlifter, which was limited in cargo capacity and range. In 1964, the U.S. Department of Defense launched the CX-X (Cargo Experimental) program, inviting proposals from aerospace manufacturers to build a new airlifter that could carry oversized cargo, including tanks, helicopters, and other heavy equipment. Lockheed won the contract in 1965, largely due to its experience with large aircraft like the C-130 Hercules. The design of the C-5 featured a high-wing configuration, with a distinctive upward-hinged nose door for "drive-on/drive-off" loading and unloading of cargo.
