In Asian countries the arm up about head level with the palm facing downward and waving is the gesture of “come here”.There are many origin stories most going back to medieval times. While waiting the storm out he noticed a temple cat sitting sheltering under the eves of a temple. The cat began to call him with the beckoning gesture. He went to see what the cat wanted. As he approached the cat, lightening hit the tree. Had he not been called by the cat he certainly would have died. This is the one I believe because it describes a cat being a cat.
