Megalosaurus was a large, meat-eating dinosaur that lived during the Middle Jurassic period, approximately 166 million years ago, in what is now southern England. Its name means “great lizard,” derived from the Greek words megas (great) and sauros (lizard). It holds an important place in scientific history as the first dinosaur to be formally named and described in 1824 by the English geologist William Buckland, marking the beginning of modern paleontology and the recognition of a distinct group of prehistoric reptiles that would later be called “dinosaurs.” In life, Megalosaurus was a formidable theropod, a bipedal predator that likely measured around nine metres in length and weighed over one tonne. Its body was powerfully built, with muscular hind legs designed for walking and possibly short bursts of running.
