Merkava III

History: The Merkava or 'Chariot' was Israel's ingenious approach to main battle tank design. Among competitive MBT designs that we know of today, the Merkava was built with crew protection in mind, as the latter was irreplaceable compared to the former. To achieve this, the crew was stationed behind the engine deck, with still some remaining rear room to house infantry. While a back-mounted turret was not an unusual design, the Merkava managed to address some of its weak spots by having its turret placed somewhat in the middle, backed-up by modular armor.
