I printed out the great slide duplicator by djedi17 and gave it a whirl.
Couple things, going the route of the lens reversing adapter, just didn't give me results I was hoping for. So I followed the tips by one of the commenters, ChicagoKeri where they recommended using the lens in the normal direction with stacking rings and an adapter to hold the tube that is attached by the len's thread for the hood. This gave me much better results.
I am using a rechargeable video light I bought off Amazon and then designed and printed a basic filter holder for it that I just taped a couple pieces of printer paper to, to diffuse the light. So far it is working fine.
I made a new attachment piece that attaches to the canon 50mm F/1.8 STM hood threads, and also for some reason the actual slide adapter I could never get it to be strait. It always sat roughly at a 45 degree angle. So, if you are having problems you can give these parts a shot to see if they help.
