Monitor Steam Engine Doubled Up

Shortly after starting the serial by Vince Cutajar on building the USS Monitor engine, MEWS was delighted to receive these drawings from Julius de Waal. They are for a double sized version. As with the smaller casting-free version, it can be made from bar stock, albeit at a much higher swarf production rate. On a base 760mm (nearly 30”) long, this really is a substantial piece of enngineering. This is a working model, if you rotate the flywheel or CrankShaft then you will able to see that the Piston, Spindle Valve, Rocker Shaft and Connecting Rod are reciprocate.
