A peacock is one of the most visually striking birds in the world, best known for the dazzling plumage of the male, which is covered in iridescent shades of blue, green, and gold. Native primarily to South Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, peacocks belong to the pheasant family, Phasianidae. The male, called a peacock, and the female, known as a peahen, are collectively referred to as peafowl. Males are famous for their spectacular tail feathers, or “train,” which can reach more than sixty percent of their total body length and are adorned with eye-like markings called ocelli.
