You can pour the water directly onto the tray, from which it flows into the pot, or if you pour into the pot, the excess water will drain onto the tray. Note that due to the overlap of the ribs, when pouring water on a tray, be careful not to flood the water. Pour into several grooves a bit like swiping horizontally. If you want, you can scale the pot like 1 or 2 % smaller to create a better water flow to the tray.
