This cone is used to enforce circular rims in pots and mugs during the ceramic drying process.
This design includes a hole at the bottom which allows air-flow into the center of the pot, which I feel many other pottery rim cone designs lack.
In addition, not having a handle in the middle of the cone allows one to stack several of these when they are not in use.
The hole itself functions as the handle allowing the potter to pull it up using their finger.
